The R-4 Hyena is not a worse Diligence Counter-Sniper. It is a medium-penetration, incendiary-assisted marksman rifle designed to kill through intelligent body targeting, stagger, burn damage, and target juggling. Here is how it performs against every faction at max level.

The R-4 Hyena has been one of the more misunderstood primary weapons added to Helldivers 2. Some players have treated it as a slower, clumsier Diligence Counter-Sniper. Others have looked at its higher direct damage and incendiary ammunition and assumed it must simply be a better version of the DCS.
Neither interpretation accurately describes the weapon.
The Hyena occupies a distinctive position between a conventional precision marksman rifle and an incendiary battle rifle. Its defining strength is not rapid headshot acquisition. It is the ability to combine medium armor penetration, high direct damage, meaningful stagger, and fire damage to eliminate medium enemies efficiently through their larger body components.
In other words, the Hyena is currently the closest thing in Helldivers 2 to a dedicated body-shot marksman rifle.
It will not reward you for using it exactly like the Diligence Counter-Sniper. It rewards flanking, deliberate target selection, shot pacing, stagger management, and allowing the burn effect to finish its work.
R-4 Hyena Weapon Stats
In its default configuration, the R-4 Hyena has the following characteristics:
| Stat | R-4 Hyena |
|---|---|
| Direct Damage | 220 |
| Default Magazine | 15 rounds |
| Short Magazine | 10 rounds |
| Recoil | 54 |
| Listed Fire Rate | 190 RPM |
| Armor Penetration | Medium |
| Additional Trait | Incendiary |
| Default Optic | 10× sniper scope |
| Default Muzzle | Muzzle brake |
| Default Ergonomics | 21 |
| Short-Mag Ergonomics Bonus | +11 |
| Projectile Stagger | 20 |
The default setup combines a 10× optic, muzzle brake, and extended 15-round magazine. This makes the Hyena look like a dedicated sniper rifle, but the weapon’s available customization allows it to function at considerably shorter distances.
At maximum level, it can equip optics ranging from low magnification up to the 10× scope. That flexibility is important because its ideal configuration changes considerably depending on the faction.
The short magazine reduces capacity from 15 rounds to 10, but its +11 ergonomics bonus raises the weapon from 21 ergonomics to 32. That does not transform it into a snappy assault rifle, but it makes target transitions and close-to-medium-range tracking noticeably more manageable.
The short-magazine configuration carries 100 total rounds. This means every shot still matters, but the Hyena’s damage-over-time component can stretch that ammunition surprisingly far when used correctly.
The Hyena’s Actual Combat Role
Under my combat-role framework, the R-4 Hyena is primarily an:
Primary Role: Elite Killer
Its best targets are medium enemies and smaller elites that are inefficient to kill with ordinary chaff-clearing weapons but do not justify dedicated anti-tank ammunition.
It also provides a limited secondary role as:
Secondary Role: Crowd Control
The Hyena is not a traditional crowd-control weapon, but its stagger force can heavily interrupt several medium Terminids and Cyborg infantry units. That gives you time to change targets, create space, stop attacks, and interrupt reinforcement calls.
Its incendiary ammunition also gives it a special form of utility:
Special Utility: Incendiary-Assisted Main-HP Damage
The direct projectile damages the specific body component that it strikes. A portion of that damage is then transferred into the enemy’s main health pool. Fire damage works differently: it directly attacks the enemy’s main health pool regardless of which body component was initially hit.
A successful ignition deals approximately 100 fire damage per second for three seconds, potentially adding around 300 damage if the effect is allowed to run its course. This varies based on individual enemy fire damage modifiers.
That interaction is the foundation of the Hyena’s body-shot efficiency.
Why the Hyena Is a Body-Shot Marksman Rifle
The Diligence and Diligence Counter-Sniper are fundamentally precision weapons. They are most efficient when you identify a small weak point, settle the optic, and place an accurate shot into the head or another vulnerable component.
The Hyena can also make precision shots, but that is not where it separates itself from the competition.
The Hyena is at its best when you:
- Target a large or vulnerable body component.
- Apply direct ballistic damage.
- Ignite the enemy.
- Change targets while the fire continues damaging the first enemy.
- Return only if another shot is necessary.
This produces a different targeting rhythm from conventional marksman-rifle gameplay.
Instead of repeatedly firing at one enemy until it falls over, the Hyena encourages you to shoot, switch targets, allow the burn to work, and then reassess.
That is especially effective against groups of Warriors, Hive Guards, Overseers, Radicals, and Agitators.
Rapidly dumping rounds into one enemy can still work, but it may sacrifice part of the weapon’s potential ammunition efficiency. The Hyena becomes much stronger when the player recognizes which enemies are already effectively dead and stops shooting them.
Recommended Hyena Configurations
Terminid Quickplay Configuration
For Terminids, my preferred general-purpose configuration is:
- 1.5× optic
- Short magazine
- Fast sidearm for Scavengers, Pouncers, and emergency close-range targets
A 2× optic is also a reasonable option for players who want slightly more magnification without committing to a traditional marksman-rifle sight picture.
Terminids apply substantial swarm pressure and frequently close the distance. Their Warriors, Hive Guards, and Commanders also have much larger and more irregular body shapes than Automaton or Illuminate infantry.
That makes low magnification practical. You are not trying to place every shot into a Devastator’s tiny head. You are targeting large torsos, armored headplates, exposed sides, and abdominal sections.
This configuration is most effective throughout approximately 25 to 50 meters, while remaining usable somewhat closer when necessary.
Automaton and Illuminate Configuration
Against Automatons and Illuminate, I generally prefer:
- 4× optic for medium-to-long-range fighting
- 10× optic for dedicated long-range overwatch
- Short magazine when handling and target transitions are the priority
- Extended magazine when operating from a stable, protected firing position
Automatons and Illuminate are more humanoid. Their useful body sections are smaller, and their movement can make component targeting more difficult—particularly on a controller.
They can also shoot back.
Maintaining approximately 50 meters or more gives you additional time to identify the correct body component, manage the recoil, and disengage if the enemy turns its attention toward you.
The default 10× optic is not mandatory, but it becomes much more valuable against these factions than it is against Terminids.
Terminid Performance and Breakpoints
The Hyena is surprisingly effective against Terminids. In fact, I currently consider Terminids its strongest overall faction.
Its ideal targets include:
- Warriors
- Hive Guards
- Hunters
- Similar medium-sized Terminid units
It can kill the smallest chaff, but doing so is often wasteful. A 220-damage, medium-penetration incendiary round is excessive against enemies such as Scavengers and Pouncers.
A Peacemaker, Redeemer, Verdict, sentry, guard dog, or other chaff-clearing tool can preserve the Hyena’s ammunition for less ideal close-range targets.
Warrior Breakpoint
A Warrior can consistently be killed with:
One solid torso or head shot followed by burn damage.
The direct impact causes significant component and main-pool damage. The incendiary effect then finishes the remaining health, often in less than a second.
This is one of the Hyena’s strongest practical breakpoints. Warriors are common enough to consume substantial ammunition, but dangerous enough that ignoring them can quickly become a problem.
The Hyena can eliminate them with one properly placed shot even to the torso while immediately transitioning to another target.
Hive Guard Breakpoint
A Hive Guard can be killed with:
Two deliberately spaced shots through its medium-armored central headplate, followed by burn damage.
The first shot damages and ignites the Hive Guard while also heavily staggering it. You can then switch to another target, allow the burn to work, and return for the second shot.
This is where the Hyena’s complete damage package becomes much more important than its raw 220-damage stat.
During Super Helldive extraction testing, I was able to engage groups of four or five Hive Guards by firing once into each target, cycling through the group, and then returning for a second shot. Each Hive Guard died after only two total hits.
That is not merely a damage advantage. It is also a crowd-control advantage.
Each hit disrupts the Hive Guard while the fire continues attacking its main health pool. Target juggling therefore keeps multiple enemies staggered, burning, and unable to advance normally.
This is especially useful against the faster red Warrior terminids that are summoned by Alpha Commanders.
A Diligence Counter-Sniper generally requires at least one additional shot in this type of situation. Moving from three rounds per target to two means the Hyena uses approximately 33% fewer rounds, while the DCS uses 50% more ammunition relative to the Hyena.
Alpha Commander Breakpoint
An Alpha Commander can generally be killed with:
Approximately five shots distributed into its body sections, followed by burn damage.
This is not an instant deletion, but it is efficient for a primary weapon attacking a large and dangerous Terminid through general body targeting.
Flanking makes this considerably easier. When an Alpha Commander is facing a teammate, confused by gas, or focused on another target, the Hyena can place several rounds into its exposed sides and abdomen without needing to fight through its forward-facing profile.
Hunters and Stalkers
The Hyena handles Hunters effectively, but Hunters can rapidly expose its weaknesses.
At a controlled distance, one accurate hit and the resulting burn can remove them cleanly. At point-blank range, however, the Hyena’s limited capacity and below-average ergonomics make it less reliable than a shotgun, assault rifle, or dedicated close-range secondary.
Stalkers can also be handled effectively with repeated medium-penetration body shots and burn. However, a Stalker that has already reached melee range is not an ideal Hyena engagement.
The weapon works best when it identifies and damages these enemies before they fully close the gap.
Stagger and Terminid Reinforcement Calls
The Hyena’s stagger is especially important against Terminids because a wide range of Terminid enemies can call reinforcements.
This includes some of the smallest bugs and extends upward through enemies such as the Alpha Commander.
When the Hyena’s stagger force meets or exceeds the target’s stagger requirement, a successful hit can interrupt that reinforcement animation.
Against Warriors, Hive Guards, and smaller enemies, this means the Hyena can provide a form of emergency reinforcement denial even when the shot does not immediately kill the target.
This mechanic is easy to overlook if the weapon is evaluated only through damage-per-second calculations.
Automaton Performance and Breakpoints
Against Automatons, the Hyena works best as a long-range flanking and body-component weapon.
It can kill Troopers, but using a limited-capacity incendiary marksman rifle against basic infantry is rarely the best use of its ammunition. Its more important targets are:
- Devastators
- Heavy Devastators
- Berserkers
- Other medium-armored Automaton infantry
Devastator Body-Shot Breakpoint
A reliable Devastator body-shot sequence is:
Two shots into any combination of the pelvis and stomach, followed by one shot into the medium-armored torso. Allow the burn damage to finish the kill.
This is a three-shot body-component kill that does not require a headshot.
The exact component combination matters. Simply placing two shots into the torso does not produce the same result. The Hyena rewards players who understand how damage is distributed across individual enemy components.
One practical method is to begin at the pelvis and allow the weapon’s recoil to carry the next shots upward through the stomach and torso.
This is particularly useful while flanking Heavy Devastators. Their shields make frontal body targeting difficult, but their lower body, side, rear, backpack, and exposed weapon-side components become much easier to attack when a teammate has their attention.
In comparable body-shot situations, the Hyena frequently needs three rounds where the Diligence Counter-Sniper needs four. That represents approximately 25% fewer rounds per kill. Viewed from the opposite direction, the DCS is using roughly 33% more ammunition than the Hyena.
The DCS remains better when the player can consistently land immediate Devastator headshots. The Hyena becomes more valuable when the angle, movement, incoming fire, controller input, or shield position makes those headshots unreliable.
Illuminate Performance
The Hyena performs well against Illuminate medium infantry, but it should not be treated as a general Voteless-clearing weapon.
Its main Illuminate targets are:
- Overseers
- Elevated Overseers
- Flesh Mobs
- Other medium enemies with substantial health or armor
Voteless
The Hyena can kill Voteless without difficulty, but it is generally excessive.
The combination of low ergonomics, limited magazine capacity, and slow target transitions makes it poorly suited to sustained Voteless swarms. A secondary weapon, guard dog, sentry, or teammate with a dedicated chaff-clearing weapon should cover that part of the engagement.
Overseers
The Hyena can kill an Overseer with:
Two headshots.
That is similar to the Diligence Counter-Sniper’s precision breakpoint.
The separation appears when clean headshots are unavailable. Against body sections and armor plates, the Hyena’s higher direct damage and incendiary effect give it better general body-shot efficiency.
The tradeoff is handling. Overseers move unpredictably, and landing deliberate component shots can be more difficult with the Hyena’s lower ergonomics—especially for controller players.
That is why I prefer more magnification and additional spacing against the Illuminate.
Flesh Mobs
Against Flesh Mobs, the Hyena benefits from targeting available heads and exposed body components, then allowing the burn effect to attack the central health pool.
The weapon is particularly effective when the player has enough space to work through multiple targets methodically rather than being forced into close-range panic fire.
Cyborg Performance
The Hyena also deserves specific consideration against the Cyborg sub-faction.
Radicals and Agitators have stagger requirements that interact favorably with the Hyena’s projectile stagger. A Hyena hit can produce a heavy stagger against these units, interrupting their immediate actions and giving the incendiary effect time to work.
This creates a similar rhythm to its Terminid gameplay:
- Shoot one Cyborg.
- Apply heavy stagger and burn.
- Change targets.
- Return only when another shot is required.
The combination of medium penetration, stagger, and main-health burn makes the Hyena particularly useful for controlling small groups of Cyborg infantry without requiring constant weak-point hits.
The Hyena should therefore not be evaluated only against the three primary enemy factions. Its stagger-and-burn package also gives it a meaningful niche against Cyborg units that can be disrupted by its stagger force.
R-4 Hyena vs. Diligence Counter-Sniper
The Hyena and Diligence Counter-Sniper are natural comparisons because both are semi-automatic, medium-penetration marksman rifles with access to long-range optics.
They are not interchangeable.
Choose the Diligence Counter-Sniper When:
- You want to prioritize precision weak-point kills.
- You can consistently hit heads.
- You want faster and more responsive handling.
- You are primarily fighting at long or very long range.
- You want immediate damage without waiting for a burn effect.
- You need a more conventional sniper, marksman-rifle experience.
Choose the R-4 Hyena When:
- You want better body-shot efficiency.
- You are deliberately targeting torsos, pelvises, armored plates, and exposed flanks.
- You want incendiary damage attacking the enemy’s main health pool.
- You want to stagger and control medium enemies.
- You enjoy pacing shots and juggling multiple targets.
- You are using gas, confusion, crossfires, or coordinated flanking.
- You want a higher-skill-ceiling weapon with more mechanical interactions.
The DCS is the better pure weak-point rifle.
The Hyena is the better body-shot rifle.
Attempting to force the Hyena into the DCS’s exact role will make it feel clumsy. Attempting to use the DCS like the Hyena will expose its weaker body-shot ammunition economy.
R-4 Hyena vs. Coyote
The Coyote represents the other side of the Hyena’s combat niche.
The Coyote is a rapid-firing incendiary weapon capable of approximately 600 rounds per minute. It is considerably better at rapidly clearing the smallest chaff.
The Hyena is slower and more deliberate, but much better suited to larger chaff enemies and small elites.
Coyote Advantages
- Much higher fire rate
- Better against dense groups of small chaff
- More forgiving when rapid follow-up shots are required
- Easier to spray across multiple small targets
Hyena Advantages
- Higher damage per projectile
- Medium armor penetration
- Better performance against Warriors, Hive Guards, Commanders, and equivalent enemies
- Meaningful stagger against medium Terminids
- Better ammunition efficiency against larger targets
- Better long-range capability
- Greater body-shot efficiency against elite infantry
The Coyote has to kill medium enemies primarily through raw damage. It does not provide the same level of stagger against targets such as Warriors and Hive Guards.
That makes the Coyote faster against the smallest bugs but potentially riskier when larger enemies reach close range.
The decision is therefore not simply which weapon deals more fire damage.
It is whether you want an incendiary chaff-clearing weapon or an incendiary-assisted medium-enemy and elite-killing weapon.
Target Juggling: The Key Hyena Technique
The most important practical skill for using the Hyena is target juggling.
Suppose four Hive Guards are advancing toward you.
A conventional approach would be to shoot the first Hive Guard repeatedly until it dies, then begin firing at the second. That leaves the other three enemies advancing at full speed.
The Hyena allows a different approach:
- Shoot the first Hive Guard and stagger it.
- Switch to the second and stagger it.
- Switch to the third.
- Switch to the fourth.
- Return to the first target for its second shot.
- Repeat as necessary.
During that sequence, every enemy is being interrupted and damaged by fire.
This spreads the Hyena’s stagger and burn across the entire group. Instead of achieving maximum damage per second against one target, you gain control over multiple enemies while improving ammunition efficiency.
Of course, you can also simply fire 3 Hyena shots into the torso of a Devastator, and with the burn, you basically leave the Devastator in critical condition for any nearby teammates to easily finish the job. A solid teamwork option.
The same principle applies to Warriors, Cyborg infantry, and other enemies that can be meaningfully staggered.
This is why the Hyena has a higher skill ceiling than its basic statistics initially suggest. The player must track:
- Which enemy has been ignited
- How long it has been burning
- Which component was struck
- Whether another shot is actually necessary
- Which enemy currently presents the greatest threat
- Which enemies can be interrupted by stagger
- Whether a reinforcement call is beginning
- Which targets are exposing their flanks
- Which teammates need assistance
When all of those elements are used together, the Hyena becomes dramatically stronger than it appears during basic firing-range testing.
Gas Synergy
Gas is probably the strongest overall damage and crowd-control pairing for the Hyena.
Useful options include:
- Gas grenades
- Gas mortar sentry
- Gas mines
- Gas Guard Dog
- Other sources of gas damage or confusion
Gas provides three major benefits.
First, gas causes confusion. Enemies stop moving directly and predictably toward the Helldiver who originally had their attention. They turn, wander, or attack other nearby targets.
That movement exposes flanks and body components that would otherwise be protected.
Second, gas directly attacks the enemy’s main health pool.
Third, the Hyena’s fire damage also attacks the main health pool.
You can therefore combine:
- Ballistic component damage
- Ballistic damage transferred into main health
- Fire damage to main health
- Gas damage to main health
- Confusion
- Stagger
This creates a strong layered-damage and crowd-control package.
The enemy becomes confused, turns away, exposes a flank, takes a Hyena round through a vulnerable body component, catches fire, and then continues losing health from both gas and burn.
Against small groups of medium enemies, the combination can be extremely efficient.
Mobility and Team Synergy
The Hyena performs best when someone or something creates the space it needs.
A Jump Pack is one of the most useful individual pairings. It allows you to create distance, reach elevated firing positions, and establish perpendicular angles against enemies focused on your teammates.
The weapon also pairs well with teammates using equipment such as:
- Ballistic shields
- The One True Flag
- Close-range shotguns
- Crowd-control weapons
- Defensive emplacements
- Gas equipment
When another player draws attention from the front, the Hyena can establish an overwatch position and attack the enemy’s sides or rear.
This is particularly valuable against shielded Automatons and medium Terminids. A teammate does not need to be coordinating through voice communication for this to work. Simply observing where the enemy is facing can create the necessary angle.
In a coordinated team, the Hyena becomes even stronger because aggro, gas, suppression, and crossfires can be deliberately organized.
Controller Considerations
As a controller player, I find the Hyena easier to use against Terminids than against Automatons or Illuminate.
Terminids generally present larger torsos and more forgiving body sections. A low-magnification optic can quickly settle onto a Warrior, Hive Guard, or Commander without requiring tiny corrective movements.
Devastators and Overseers are more demanding. Their useful components are smaller, they move in more humanoid and sometimes erratic ways, and they can return fire.
Mouse-and-keyboard players may have an easier time rapidly selecting those components. That does not make the weapon ineffective on controller, but it makes spacing and optic selection more important.
Controller players should strongly consider:
- The short magazine
- A 1.5× or 2× optic against Terminids
- A 4× or greater optic against Automatons and Illuminate
- Peak Physique armor when practical
- Mobility tools that create additional aiming time
- A fast secondary weapon for close-range emergencies
The Hyena’s Major Weaknesses
The R-4 Hyena is powerful, but it is not universally strong.
Poor Base Ergonomics
At 21 ergonomics in its default configuration, the Hyena is slow to settle and transition. The short magazine helps, but the weapon never becomes exceptionally responsive.
Limited Capacity
A 15-round extended magazine or 10-round short magazine is insufficient for sustained chaff clearing. Poor target selection can empty the weapon quickly.
Reliance on Damage Over Time
The fire effect is part of the weapon’s damage budget. Players who continue firing until every enemy visibly collapses will frequently waste ammunition.
Demanding Component Knowledge
The Hyena rewards knowledge of enemy anatomy. Shooting the wrong body component can noticeably change a kill breakpoint.
The Devastator’s two-lower-body-plus-one-torso sequence is a clear example. Three intelligently distributed shots can succeed where poorly placed torso shots fail.
Vulnerable at Close Range
Its handling, semi-automatic operation, and magazine limitations make it uncomfortable when surrounded by small enemies.
The Hyena can defend itself, but it should not be expected to replace a dedicated close-range weapon.
Less Efficient for Pure Headshot Gameplay
The Hyena can land headshots, but players who want to pursue headshots almost exclusively should generally use the Diligence, Diligence Counter-Sniper, Amendment, Deadeye, or another weapon designed around that targeting profile.
Final Verdict
The R-4 Hyena is not a defective Diligence Counter-Sniper and it is not a conventional incendiary rifle.
It is a medium-penetration, incendiary-assisted, body-shot marksman rifle.
Its primary job is eliminating medium enemies and small elites through intelligent body-component targeting. Its stagger provides supplementary crowd control, while its burn damage attacks the enemy’s main health pool and rewards deliberate shot pacing.
It performs particularly well against Terminids because their larger body sections are easier to target and because its stagger can control Warriors, Hive Guards, and smaller units. It also performs well as a long-range flanking rifle against Automatons and Illuminate, provided the player understands the relevant body components.
Against Cyborg Radicals and Agitators, its stagger-and-burn combination gives it another valuable control niche.
The weapon becomes strongest when paired with gas, mobility, divided enemy aggro, and a secondary weapon capable of handling small chaff.
The Hyena is not the easiest marksman rifle to use. There are numerous moving parts: body-component health, main health, fire damage, stagger thresholds, enemy facing, optic selection, shot pacing, and target sequencing.
That complexity is also what makes it interesting.
Used poorly, it feels like a slow DCS with bad ergonomics.
Used correctly, it can kill several medium enemies with fewer rounds, stagger an entire advancing group, interrupt reinforcement calls, exploit flanks, and layer ballistic, fire, and gas damage together.
For players willing to learn its mechanics, the R-4 Hyena is one of the most distinctive and rewarding marksman rifles currently available in Helldivers 2.
It has a real combat role.
You simply have to stop treating every marksman rifle like a headshot rifle.
